KOJOMONO PROJECT
Ghana produces 2,300 tonnes of plastic waste daily, with half remaining uncollected and the rest mostly burned or improperly landfilled. This mismanagement endangers the environment and human health, and can lead to severe flooding with plastic waste clogging rains.
The project involves community-based collection and recycling activities, aiming to empower women to manage their own plastic waste collection and recycling businesses, providing sustainable income and employment to the informal waste sector.
The waste is sorted, washed, and recycled into pellets for manufacturers. Plastic credit finance will enable the project's expansion across the country, establishing new collection points and recycling facilities, while continuing to benefit local communities.
